Finding the Problem Thought Fields - Excerpt

    3. Looking for every thought field

A look at further examples: On arrival the client will say: “I am so stressed and feel depressed.” So how are you going to proceed given this brief all encompassing information? You first thought should be: ‘Why is this person stressed and depressed? It’s not a normal state of living’. Indeed I know you will remind me that: ‘everyone is stressed these days due to pressure of work, overload of information and intense demands on a their time stretching them to their physical and mental limits.’

Unfortunately we all know this to be the case but it doesn’t make it any more acceptable just because so many are suffering from this dangerous problem. In fact it shows that we should all fully realise how this unnatural way of leading our lives has become ‘normal’ for so many people. And of course the great danger lies in the fact that eventually the body will complain: ‘I can’t cope any more so I’ll make you stop’ and then physical problems arise which can sometimes be very serious, such as cancer which will finally terminate the presenting issues!

Using our gentle and effective TFT to resolve the earlier symptoms of possible major problems developing is by far the better route to a full recovery!

So your asking why is this person stressed shows you are understanding that this is a totally abnormal way of living and to have any hope of returning to an acceptable existence you will have to discover the full details of the many causes of his/her present condition. This will inevitably be a combination of worries, anxieties, fears – even panics in certain situations and traumas. If you add this lot together it’s hardly surprising that you client reports also feeling depressed!!

So you have a collection of problems which in turn result in a basketful of thought fields that all have their perturbations sitting up waiting to be addressed! Now the really important part of your work is finding each and every thought field that needs resolution. Don’t be fobbed of with: “Oh I’m worried and anxious about everything.” Looked at globally as the client will do and think simply that everything is ‘my problem’ must be broken down into the many thought fields that, when put together, will indeed form ‘my problem.’

So here your really vital questioning begins. Having established there are many worries and anxieties involved, begin putting the details on them. For example: “What causes the most worry? “Your boss because she doesn’t value your work even though you have been in this job for many years and know exactly what you are doing” “She also puts unnecessary pressure on your time by demanding stupid reports on the progress of your department” - etc etc. This and it’s myriad variations are so common in the commercial world. With further questioning the client in this example will come up with several more concerns over her boss at work and each one will be a unique thought field needing treatment.

Avoid the temptation to save time by lumping the whole lot under one heading ‘my boss’ and treating it as one problem while your client simply thinks of ‘my boss.’ Even this might give you a phoney result because your client could well be thinking simply of her ‘nasty demanding boss’ and this could give her a feeling of being more relaxed over the issue. But that still leaves all the other thought fields sitting in the basket untouched! Always remember that – it’s what the client is thinking about that gets treated. TFT is very precise in every way and that is why it’s so powerful in targeting the very root cause or core issue of the problem being addressed – given that you have properly identified this root cause an are therefore treating the required thought field.

Having spent time and identified as many thought fields as you can find, you must then ask your client to review the ‘basketful’ and ask: “Which problem from the one’s we have found upsets you the most?” Usually your client will not have any difficulty telling you and so go ahead and treat the particular worry/anxiety/fear involved. Always remember our Fear algorithm e-a-c 9g sq. will also address worries and anxieties since these are really lesser forms of fear.

    3. Understanding Anxiety & Fear

Have you ever felt anxious or fearful? What a daft question! None of us can go through life without experiencing these very common emotions. It is because these emotions are so prevalent throughout life that the question is obviously ridiculous.

But why are anxiety and fear such a normal part of our lives? It is because in it’s most basic form it is nature’s way of protecting us. As such we all exhibit exactly the same reaction to given situations both mentally and physically. Lets look at the well known Fight or Flight syndrome. If you and I go out together into the garden and suddenly spot a large tiger just behind a bush, we will instantly both have identical mind and body reactions: Immediately enormous fear will take over our thoughts to the exclusion of everything else so that we can furiously work out what to do – fast!

Also we will both exhibit identical body reactions: The pupils in the eyes will constrict, skin vessels constrict so that it goes white since blood supply is increased to muscles, brain and heart. There is increased blood supply to vital organs and there is a release of adrenaline. The body is following a set of instructions.

Dr. Callahan explains that it is this very specific reaction to fear – or anger, or guilt etc. that is shared by all members of the species and is a highly ordered reaction. If it happened from disorder or disturbance, it would not be possible to obtain order from it. Also any medical problem shows a standard set of symptoms for a particular illness. This again is the body following instructions to cope with the invader and eliminate it from the system.
    Treating Traumatic Stress

    CHAPTER 6

    Trauma and PTSD - Excerpt

    4. Treating Traumatic Stress

So how do we tackle this problem with TFT? First and foremost the client does not have to talk in detail about their traumatic experience! As we know it is necessary only for the person to be thinking about the problem to be able to treat it with TFT. This will tune the thought field and the perturbations in that thought field will be active at that time. Remember we are addressing only the perturbations in the thought field and removing them from activity. This means that the memory of the trauma is not touched – only the emotional upset has gone. All is the same except for the upset.

After treatment, most people find that their recall of the past event is even better than it was before. This is because, often for the first time, the person is able to relate their memory of the event without going through a fog of painful emotion. He begins to remember details that were previously denied because of their negative impact on his emotional well-being.

Although this is far better than having to talk at length about the past event, for many people even thinking about it is enough to cause immediate upset. If the upset causes the person to break down and cry then you have a situation where the troubled person needs urgent help – and as a TFT therapist you are in a better position than anyone else to give that help – fast! You will have cases where the person will suddenly break down without warning and you have no idea why. But the joy of TFT is that you don’t need to know why and still be able to give effective treatment!
Lets look at what you know. First, under these circumstances you can be virtually 100% certain that your client is reliving a past trauma which has suddenly slipped out from its place under the carpet! Secondly it is not only obvious that the person is thinking about the problem but also that the starting SUD is 10 (or maybe nearer 20 on our 1 – 10 scale)! Thirdly your client is temporarily in no condition to be able to follow your instructions to carry out the treatment.
